Neon Pothos

Neon Pothos

Common name: Neon Pothos

Botanical Name:  Epipremnum aureum ‘Neon’.  The Neon Pothos is cultivar of a very common species of plant, Epipremnum aureum, formly known as Epiremnum pothos, and often called, simply, pothos.  Pothos, an extremely common and easy to grow house plant, come in many varieties, all beautiful in their own way.

Description:

The Neon Pothos got its name from its bright, light green leaves.  The leaf color can vary slightly from a more yellow, lime green to a slightly darker, bright green.  The leaves look very similar to Golden Pothos in size and shape, but differ greatly in color.  Both have leaves that are wide, heart shaped and large, typically 3 to 4 inches long. The Neon Pothos has leaves that are slightly shiny and smooth, with little to no variegation.

Preferences

Light

The Neon, like most varieties of Pothos,  is an easy plant to grow and it isn’t too particular about light.  However, it grows best in bright, indirect light. The plant can still grow well in moderate or even low light, but the bright neon leaves will darken, making the plant much less extraordinary.  If light is direct, the leaves may fade or scorch.

Temperature

Pothos like the Neon pothos are native to the Solomon Islands, making them well suited for warm temperatures, 70°-90°F. However, the plant can still do well in temperatures as low as 55°F.  This plant is an ideal indoor plant as it thrives at ‘room temperature’ in most homes, but it can grow well outdoors in many climates, as long as it is brought indoors before temperatures drop to 50°F or lower.

Watering

Neon pothos are not particular about watering.  But for best growth, err on the side of letting it dry out a bit between waterings.  Before watering, feel the soil to be sure that the top couple of inches have dried out, while deeper in the soil remains damp.  Typically pothos need only be watered every 1-2 weeks.  Overwatering can stress the plant and cause leaves to yellow.  Underwatering may cause the leaves to wilt, but should be recoverable.

Humidity:

Neon pothos is tolerant of most humidity levels, but because it is native to the tropics, it doesn’t hurt to periodically mist it if your air is particularly dry.

Soil

he Neon Pothos will thrive in a nutrient rich, well draining soil. However, this plant is not particularly picky about soil. It will grow well in nearly any commercially available potting soil. LIke most plants, root rot can be a problem if soil is too compact or becomes soggy.

Care Tips

The Neon Pothos, like most pothos varieties, is an easy plant to grow, making it perfect for the lazy plant owner or beginner.  Neon Pothos is not particularly vulnerable to disease or pests and it tolerates most indoor temperatures and humidity levels.  It isn’t super vulnerable to over- or underwatering and can grow well even if lighting isn’t perfect.  Generally, it doesn’t require any special care or really much attention at all.

However, the Neon Pothos, like all pothos, has a few common issues, and our troubleshooting guide for pothos can be found here.

We have also included our guide to propagating pothos here.

Safety Note

The Neon Pothos, like all pothos, is toxic to humans or pets if ingested.  If you have a pet or child that may chew on a plant, be sure to keep this plant out of reach, or consider a less toxic houseplant.
